Experience Homelessness -
Feb 22-23, 2008
The 3rd annual "Experience Homelessness Weekend", in conjunction with 30 Hour
Famine, will take place at Unity Park beginning at 6pm Friday Feb 23 and will end at
2pm the next day. This has been quite the event the last two years. Last year we even
had about 70 people spend the night and about 200 people the following day, despite
the fact we were besieged by a drought busting 4-5" rain.
This year, things are going to be a little different. We will not be having fanfare, hoopla,
festivities, or any other regaling. In the past we've had bands, singers and skits. We've
had TV cameras, radio interviews, and a Grammy-winning singer. Two years ago we
had a massive fast-ending feast. This year, its back to basics. We will fast for 30 hours,
but on Friday night we will truly focus on hunger. We will explore what the bible says
about hunger, and what our response to it should be. We will pray for the thousands
that die daily of hunger. And we will discuss what we can do in response from our own
backyard. Saturday we will shift our focus to the homeless, specifically those living in
the E. Lancaster corridor of Ft Worth. We will discuss the issue, and of course pray. We
will pray for Unity Park, the local shelters, the neighborhood, Feed By Grace, Pastor
Lano, and more. We will walk the streets and claim the neighborhood for Jesus. We will
have some intimate praise & worship music. And we will share a meal at 1pm to end
our 30 hour fast (which means, get up Friday morning and have a bountiful breakfast at
6:30).
We've gotten to the point at Unity Park where we are having 3 or 4 celebratory events
during the year, and that's OK. But I believe we need a time for serious and somber
reflection as well, and there's no better time for that than "Experience Homelessness
Weekend" and 30 Hour Famine.
There will be the customary liability release form to fill out and bring with you (It will
appear on the FBG website on Monday). And we also ask that you register on the
website as well so that we have an idea of how many folks to expect. Feel free to
contact me with any questions or comments. We look forward to spending the night on
the ground with all you brave souls that are radical enough to join us. Blessings!
